A pregnancy support belt, a seamless belly band and compression socks laid flat

Pregnancy Support Belt vs Belly Band: What Is the Difference?

The two names get used for the same thing, but they are different products that do different jobs.

What a pregnancy support belt does

A support belt has a panel across the lower back, a band that sits under the bump and, usually, a strap over the top. It fastens with hook-and-loop closures, so you set how much lift you want and change it as your bump grows.

  • Lifts the bump from below.
  • Shares the load with your lower back and hips.
  • Best for walking, standing and long days on your feet.
  • Shows under tight tops, so most people wear it over a t-shirt.

What a belly band does

A belly band is a seamless tube of stretch fabric that sits over the bump. There is nothing to fasten.

  • Light, even hold.
  • Keeps unbuttoned jeans in place.
  • Smooth under fitted clothes.
  • Does not lift the bump the way a belt does.
